The opening ceremony was a highlight event of the 2006 festival.
Nancy Bird-Walton, accompanied by dignitaries, unveiled a sculpture by Ted Prior, a local artist. The sculpture, which represents a combination of a plane, people and lanterns, commemorates the local Volunteer Defense Corps who operated during World War II.
The Foot Regiment provided an authentic historical atmosphere.
