Old Bar Heritage listed Airstrip is celebrating its 79th Anniversary. It was constructed in the mid 1920’s by George Bunyan and was officially designated as an aerodrome "suitable for use by all landplanes" with the issue of Notice to Airman 14/1931.
The New England Airways Limited used Old Bar as a port of call and refuelling stop on its Sydney - Brisbane route during the 1930's.
During the first twelve months of WWII the RAAF based a
Wackett Gannet survey aircraft along with personnel, at Old Bar and the airfield was designated emergency airfield for the RAAF aircraft throughout the war years. During this period local residents, on occasion, laid a beacon path along the beach to guide aircraft being ferried north to Australia's war front.
Many of Australia's famous aviation pioneers used Old Bar Airfield. In 2000 the airstrip was placed on the Heritage Register of NSW. The airstrip continues to provide a picturesque venue for many recreational pilots to use and is maintained by community volunteers.
Old Bar Heritage Listed Airstrip Committee celebrates each year by having a fun fly in and would like to encourage all aviators to participate.
Paul Bennet from Maxx G Aerobatics enterains the crowd over the weekend. For details of his show go to: www.maxxgaerobatics.com.au
